Food: Is it Revolutionary?

Share

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution...have you seen it? It's a new show on ABC at 9pm EST. The show is based in Huntington, West Virginia which is noted as the unhealthiest city in America. He's targeting the schools and what we are feeding our children and is hoping to spread positive change across the country. He is from the U.K. and did similar things there with positive results. He even has a petition which you can sign to support his cause in going to the White House at the end of the series.

I watched the pilot episode of this show and it got me thinking. I did enjoy the show and Jamie Oliver and want to watch more, but haven't had the chance yet. I'm wondering how many of you have seen it and what you have thought.

My first thought was wondering if this really is revolutionary. Then, I thought that these people are smart and wouldn't have named the show lightly without thinking it through. So, I checked the dictionary and it turns out that "revolution" is a great word for the title of the show. Initially, I was thinking of it in terms of "radically new or innovative," but another definition of the word "revolution" is "a procedure or course, as if in a circuit, back to a starting point." This is what I was really thinking while watching the show. It just seems that we really just need to get back to where we started with food. I mean, it's not a new idea to cook meals and prepare foods with with natural produce, spices, meats, and dairy. Modern conveniences, costs, and time-saving procedures have all led to our country's widespread consumption of mass-produced, processed foods.

I'm just now learning about Jamie Oliver, but he seems to have a commitment to fresh, easy, quick, fun food and has an compassionate desire to help kids. I'm intrigued and interested and the shows that I have missed are on my list to watch.

Please share your thoughts.

  1. I have seen the show and I agree with Jamie- we eat too much sugar and processed food. Just think how much better each of us would look and feel if we just made a few food choice adjustments. Maybe if we all try eating better for a month it would change how we look at food.

  2. Yes, this is definitely true. But, of course...easier said than done.

  3. So far I've only seen the pilot episode, but I couldn't stop from watching it! I found it to be very unsettling, I suppose that's part of what makes it good for TV. Since working for a chiropractor, I have really changed my views about how we fuel our bodies. Here in the Twin Cities, we actually have a radio show that talks about nutrition....it's called "Dishing up Nutrition". Here is a link: http://www.weightandwellness.com/radioshow.html
I've learned a lot from listening to that as well. It is actually very surprising what is "good" for you.

Unfortunately, it has been cheaper for us as consumers, and more profitable for certain food companies to put additives and preservatives and such in our food. It is nice to see that there are more food companies, and venues for us to get "whole" food. Not only that, but the whole food tasters better. Hopefully, as more people are consuming the whole foods, the price will go down so it can be more affordable to everyone.

  4. Rochelle, you are so right. Whole, natural, clean foods taste better. And, hopefully the prices will go down so it can be more affordable to everyone...what a great point!
