UPDATE: Porridge

I wanted to share an update on our porridge progress since I feel that whole grains are such an important part of the diet. So far, my boys have enjoyed rice cereal with black beans, rice cereal with lentils, and organic oatmeal. I have added tahini to some and am looking forward to adding more "healthy extras" as mentioned in Super Baby Food. Both boys seem to enjoy it.

I have served it both fresh and reheated from the refrigerator. Both have seemed to work fine, but I have had to make a few adjusmtents.
FRESH
I have ground the powder in my blender (not perfectly fine, but not too course yet either). I have cooked it on the stove top and it is piping hot. I have found that adding an ice cube or 2 will help thin it a little and cool it down. You might want to start with a little less water so it's still ok being slightly thinned by the ice cube melting.

REFRIGERATED
I have cooked extra and refrigerated immediately in glass bowls. These bowls are perfect for reheating or for getting out a portion and saving the rest. I have found that I need to add a little water or milk once it has been refrigerated, but this has proven to be a super easy time-saver.
Most days, I'm serving oatmeal at breakfast and rice cereal at dinner. I'm planning to add more healthy grains soon like millet.

Please share your thoughts and ideas.

  1. Hey! I am about to embark on the wonderful adventures of solid food...cereal. I can't believe that my baby will be 5 months old tomorrow. Anyway, I have Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. Did you make your own cereal or did you buy it? If you bought it, what kind? At what age did you introduce cereal for the first time? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Also, did you give your boys a little water after they ate the cereal? Not in the cereal, but as a drink? I am just curious...and if you did, did you boil it?

  3. I used store-bought, but it is one of my regrets. I wished I had stuck with making it in the beginning. I tried at first and failed, so I gave up. I have recently started making it and it is going well. It is amazing how much you can really do with the porridge as baby gets older.

I also did start a sippy cup of water once we were decently established on the cereal after 6 months. I don't think you want to give water before then. It took my boys a while to catch on to being fed and I wanted to concentrate on that. I did typical sippy cups, but I would highly recommend straw cups. Also, don't rule out just learning to drink from a regular cup. This is something I also wish I had started earlier. Just think ahead and try to teach skills that you don't have to eventually wean from later. Cups and straws can still be used as an adult. I did not boil the water and just used my filtered tap water. However, you might want to discuss with your pediatrician as this is something that may be dependent on your local water supply.

Whatever you decide, be patient. It sometimes takes a while to catch on, but he will do it. You might check out these 4 posts for more information on what I did and when.

  4. Great! Thanks for the information! I read that if you make your own cereal, which I am totally geared up for at this point, you should wait until 6 months. However, we feel like he is ready to eat now at 5 months. So, we were going to feed him Earth's Best whole grain rice cereal for 1 month before I begin making it. I know this is one of your regrets, so I wanted to find out if you regret it because you had started making it and didn't keep at it or if you regret it because you think it would have been better to make it. Does that make sense? I am confused b/c in the Super Baby Food book, she says not to make cereal until the 6 month mark, but she says to begin feeding baby at 4 months if you want. It's so hard to know what to do!

  5. First, let me say that you could also start with something like avocado. As for my regret, I think it was for both reasons that you mentioned. I regret not sticking with it to get it right and feel that it would have been a better building block. But, I do think the Earth's Best cereals are great and that is what I used. I agree, It is so hard to know what to do and maybe someone else will chime it with their thoughts or experiences. Keep me posted on how it goes.
