This is it. I've been making my boys' food since they were 6 months old and I'm just dying to talk about it. So, here it is...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Commenting
We all need ideas about making food for and feeding our babies and toddlers. Please read the posts and make your comments with any thoughts, questions, ideas, or experiences. I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.
Hey! We are just getting ready to go to our little one's four month appointment. When did you start feeding your boys cereal? What kind? I've heard between 4-6 months. Also, how many times a day were they still taking breastmilk/formula?
Great question! We started at 22 weeks with rice cereal and it was a slow go at first. I was adamant on not adding any fruit or anything to it until they learned to eat the cereal alone, so it took a few weeks. Definitely talk to your pediatrician and when you're ready...go for it!
I would suggest making sure you start at a time when you know you will be able to be home to concentrate on consistent feedings. I also suggest using this time for some training. It may seem that he's young and it's crazy, but it's easier to teach him to keep his hands out of the food now than it will be 2, 4 or 6 months from now. He will get it! Even if you're using an infant seat now, this training will translate to highchair manners as you go.
I suggest organic brown rice. I really recommend making your own, even though I caved and did not stick with making my own at the beginning. Once you get the hang of it, it really is easy. I now have stashes of ground grains in my refrigerator to use at any time. See my recent posts on Super Porridge and Healthy Grains (links listed below).
When we started, we were still doing 5 liquid feedings, but soon changed to 4. I was formula feeding at this point. I started with rice cereal at breakfast, then added it for dinner too. Soon, you will move on to adding a vegetable for lunch, then fruit for breakfast and another vegetable for dinner. I will be posting more about these schedules soon!
Another thing to remember and discuss with your pediatrician is that you don't have to start solids with cereal. You can always start with something like avocado or sweet potato. But, if you're making your own healthy grains for cereal, then I don't see a good argument for not. The largest section on the food guide pyramid is healthy grains.
